Rabbit

  • Rabbits can live either inside the house or outside in the right house. They might need to go in a Shed in the winter of it is very cold.
  • They need to have a safe place to live with a nice bedroom area. This could be a hutch in the garden with a closed in sleeping place or an indoor cage with a closed in sleeping area.
  • Rabbits need to have lots of exercise, you can buy nice closed in pens so they can run in the house safely- Don’t let them run about freely in the house or they might nibble some wires which might hurt them or break your TV!
  • If they are outside in an exercise area it is a good idea to have a hard surface underneath so they can’t dig their way out. This will help to keep their claws nice and short.
  • Not all rabbits like to be picked up or cuddled. Do this carefully at first until they get used to you.
  • Make sure you Rabbit has lots of fresh clean water. You can get water bottles to add to the cages from the Pet shop.
  • Rabbits like to use the same part of their house a toilet. If they are living inside you can add a small litter tray for them to use. That area needs to be cleaned everyday to stop them getting poorly. The bed area should be cleaned every week. This can be either straw or paper.
  • Rabbits need to eat lots of different things and not just all vegetables or dandelions. They need some special Rabbit food from the pet shop too s they don’t get a bad tummy.

Hamster

  • Hamsters need to live in a proper cage or tank which you can buy from the Pet Shop. You can get special bedding for them there too. Shredded up toilet paper is good if it is not coloured or scented. Their cage needs to be fully cleaned out once a week and new clean bedding put in. You don’t want their cage to get smelly (Yuck).
  • They need to have fresh clean water which is normally given to them by a drinking bottle, so they don’t knock it over.
  • They should be feed on special dried food from the Pet Shop along with some small treats like bits of carrot or apple. Don’t give them too much of this as they are very small and it might go a bit smelly if it sits in their cage for too long.
  • Hamsters like to be awake at night and not in the daytime. This is called Nocturnal. Because of this they might not want to play much in the day. You might also want to keep the cage in a room where you are not trying to sleep. Much better downstairs.
  • Hamsters are very small and can be very easily frightened. You must be very gentle when you handle them, so they don’t try and runaway or bite you.
  • Hamsters can move very fast if they want to and can fit in very, very small spaces. Be careful if you take them out to play with them. Maybe get a big cardboard box and sit in that with them. They could get lost in the house and then nibble wires which would hurt them and break things in your house.
  • Mainly Hamsters should live on their own as it is very hard to tell if they are a boy or a girl and you don’t want to end up with loads of Hamster babies.
